New Cover of Fiona Apple’s Hot Knife

I have long been a fan of the wonderfully daring artist Miss Fiona Apple and felt an homage to her was long overdue. As soon as I heard the track Hot Knife from her latest album (the extravagantly titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do) I knew I had to attempt a cover.

Secondly, the multi-layered vocal lines were on repeat in my brain and it seemed the only way to free myself from the earworm was to record it!

So, off I went to try my hand at the many complex layers of melody – and to my surprise, actually managed it without too much consternation! Once I had my a cappella parts down I needed an accomplice to complete the song. And since it was from Robert J. Mills that I first heard the song (which he had posted on his Facebook wall) I got in touch with the maestro himself and asked whether he’d be up for collaborating. Being the gentleman that he is, he acquiesced and some time later, he presented me with a truly impressive track – faithful to the mood of the original but very much with its own unique identity too.

RJ and I have collaborated on a number of songs now (The Tailor & The Seamstress, Conquistador, Weapon) and it’s always both a pleasure and a privilege to work with such a talented musician.

But enough gushing! Go listen to the track here and see what you think 🙂
